Challenge

Based on data from the International Coffee Organisation in 2012, we estimated that global consumption of coffee to go hits 500 million cups everyday. Imagine how much wooden and plastic stirrers get wasted for 5 seconds of use.

insight

10 years ago, on the coffee machine of the studio where me and Rodrigo used to work back in Rio, we would see dozens of plastic stirrers being thrown in this huge trash bin in each coffee break. So, right there, we decided to do something about it and started to figure out how we could dematerialize those plastic stirrers. It was so simple, almost obvious, as when we were kids and we’d dunk a cookie on the coffee with milk. We could do the same but stir it.

solution

The Ecookie, as the name states, is an ecodesigned cookie.

It dematerializes the waste attached to every single plastic stirrer by simply making it edible. Which means its done fully with reneawable resources. Therefore outperforming the existing alternatives while enhancing the experience of anyone drinking a cup of coffee.

The potential positive impact of the ecookie is equivalent to thousands of plastic tons of waste ending up in landfills every single day.

The project was so impactful that it viralized in 2011, when we had orders from around the world. It was recognized with the International Design Excellence Awards, known as IDEA Awards by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and nationally with the IDEA Awards Brazil.

Published in Victionary's Love Earth book featured as one of the 100 Ecodesigns showing how we can have a sustainable future. Later in, 2012 our ecookies was exhibited as part of The Food Project: Taste of Shape in the Mart Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, in Italy.
